Piano Theory 1-12

Playing the Piano
  • You should sit so your body is centered in line with D (next to Middle C) NOT just any C!
  • You should be seated so your feet can rest flat on the floor or you may need to use a foot stool.
  • You may need to sit forward on the piano stool or chair.
  • There should be some distance between you and the piano, not too close or too far away.
  • Your arms (from your elbow to your wrists) should be parallel to the floor.
  • Your hands should be well up on the white notes to prevent wrists from sagging.
  • You should not “rest” your palms on the piano whilst playing at all.
  • Try to avoid “bouncing” your hand when you play your notes and ensure your thumb remains “over” the white notes.
  • Fingers should be slightly rounded and curved.
  • Sit with good posture, stretch your back upwards and avoid slumping or rounding your shoulders.
  • There will be times when you need to glance at your fingers and piano keys, but most times your eyes should be reading the music!
