Piano Theory 1-14

Key Touch Sensitivity
  • All acoustic, digital pianos and most electronic keyboards are key touch sensitive.
  • This means if you strike the note heavily, the sound produced will sound louder than if you were to strike the note with less intensity.
  • Some older style electronic keyboards or cheaper models may not have key touch sensitive keys. This means it won’t matter how lightly or heavily a note is pressed, it will still produce the same level of volume.
  • It is important for beginners to develop good finger action by using a key touch sensitive keyboard.
  • All acoustic and digital pianos have “weighted” keys.
  • This requires extra finger pressure when compared to playing an electronic keyboard.
  • Many digital piano models are approved by examination boards to use for practical piano exams.
  • Dynamics in music (soft and loud) can ONLY be produced on a key sensitive keyboard.
