- A tie is a curved line between two notes of the same pitch.
- The curved line goes under the head of the notes or over the head of the notes.
- Two notes in exactly the same space OR on exactly the same line are notes of the same pitch.
- In the diagram below, in each example two minims are tied. Each minim is held for two beats or counts.
- The first minim is played and the second minim is held (NOT played) – thus lasting for 4 beats in total.
- Both examples show how the curve is used in relation to the head of the note, when stems are “up” and when stems are “down”.
