There are many tutor books on the market that have various ways of introducing music notes to beginners. By using a few basic standard positions, it allows a beginner to play songs that include a wide range of notes. Remember, the thumbs are number “ones” and the little fingers are number “fives”.
- The Middle C Position indicates that both thumbs are to “share” Middle C and each of the fingers will fall naturally on every white note that follows.

- The C Position indicates that the Left hand 5th finger will be placed on the “1st” C down from Middle C – and finishing with the thumb on G. The right hand will “copy” the left hand notes by placing the thumb on Middle C – and finishing with the 5th finger on G. The hands are therefore positioned an “octave” apart.

- The G Position indicates that the Left hand 5th finger will be placed on the “1st” G down from Middle C – finishing with the thumb on “D” (just past Middle C). The right hand thumb is placed on the first G up from Middle C – finishing with the little finger on D (which is the 2nd D up from Middle C). These hands are also positioned an “octave” apart.
